Perrin Technique

Lorna has specialised in Perrin Technique for the osteopathic diagnosis
and treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME AND Long COVID LONDON

London Perrin Technique (CFS/ME) CLinic

The Perrin Technique™ is based on Dr Perrin’s theory that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalopathy (CFS/ME) results from dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system, secondary to a combination of stress factors and poor lymphatic drainage. The stress factors can be physical (through postural problems or injury), emotional (work, family), environmental (exposure to toxins), or an overloaded immune system from fighting an allergy or an infection including Long Covid.

The systematic approach applied in the The Perrin Technique™ works on the basis of using osteopathic techniques to promote healthy functioning of the sympathetic nervous system and the lymphatic system together with alleviating physical stressors.

What will happen during the session? The first session is 90 minutes long and involves taking a full case history and examination. We will discuss how your condition impacts you as an individual and the research that supports this treatment approach. Based on this appointment we will give you an idea of prognosis and how long it would be before we would expect to see results from treatment in your individual case.

The examination involves a postural assessment. We will look at how you move and use your joints and muscles. It also involves an examination of the lymphatic vessels in your neck and chest.

If time allows, this appointment will also include treatment and discussion of the home exercise protocol.

You may want to consider bringing a chaperone with you to the appointment and you will be asked to sign a consent form.

Please be aware that we usually try to see patients weekly for the first 6 weeks, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me by email: [email protected]

Practitioners use these signs as a positive aid to diagnosis, along with assessing patient symptoms and detailed history.

Treatment Approach

The Perrin Technique involves:
  1. Targeting lymphatics on the chest and back
  2. Improving fluid motion around the brain and spinal cord
  3. Using massage techniques to drain toxins from the blood

Conditions Treated

The Perrin Technique is now also used to treat:
  1. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)
  2. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
  3. Fibromyalgia
  4. Some symptoms of long COVID
  5. Lymphedema and Lipedema

Diagnostic Approach

Five common physical signs often present in ME/CFS patients:
  1. Mechanical disturbances of the thoracic spine
  2. Breast varicosities
  3. Tender Perrin's point (third left intercostal space)
  4. Tender coeliac plexus
  5. Dampened cranial flow
Whilst the Perrin Technique shows plenty of promise, it's important to note that more research is needed to fully establish its efficacy. Patients interested in this treatment should consult with qualified practitioners and consider it as part of a comprehensive treatment approach.

What Conditions Can The Perrin Technique Treat?

The Perrin Technique can treat several conditions:
  • Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Some symptoms of Long COVID (Post-COVID Syndrome)

The technique was originally developed for ME/CFS but has been found effective for related conditions with similar symptoms. For Long COVID, early research shows promising results in treating:
  • Significant fatigue
  • Poor sleep
  • Shortness of breath
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Exhaustion following activity

The Perrin Technique aims to address underlying causes by improving lymphatic drainage and clearing toxins from the central nervous system. It can help with a broad category of chronic fatigue conditions sharing similar symptom profiles.

What training is required to become a licensed practitioner of the Perrin Technique?

To become a licensed practitioner of the Perrin Technique, the following training requirements are typically needed:
  1. Manual therapy background: Qualified as osteopaths, physiotherapists, or chiropractors.
  2. CranioSacral Therapy knowledge: Experience and knowledge required.
  3. Perrin Technique workshop: Attendance at a 2-3 day specialized course.
  4. Craniosacral course: Recommended and may be required for full certification.
  5. Certification process: Additional requirements after workshop completion.
  6. Continuing education: Ongoing training and conference attendance encouraged.

The workshops typically cover:
  • Applied anatomy and physiology of the sympathetic nervous and neuro-lymphatic systems
  • Pathogenesis of ME/CFS and fibromyalgia
  • Diagnostic methods and consultation processes
  • Practical training in examination, diagnosis, and treatment

Full certification may require additional steps beyond attending the initial workshop.

Perrin Technique and Long COvid

Here are some key points about how the Perrin Technique specifically targets Long COVID symptoms:
  1. The Perrin Technique aims to address the underlying causes of Long COVID symptoms by improving lymphatic drainage and clearing toxins from the central nervous system.
  2. It involves manual therapy techniques like: Gentle effleurage (stroking) of the neck, back, and chest
  3. The technique is based on the hypothesis that Long COVID, like CFS/ME, may be caused by impaired function of the lymphatic and "glymphatic" systems. By improving drainage, it aims to reduce the buildup of inflammatory chemicals thought to contribute to symptoms.
  4. Treatment typically involves: Weekly sessions with a trained practitioner
  5. It targets a range of Long COVID symptoms, including: Fatigue
  6. A preliminary study showed promising results in reducing fatigue symptoms in Long COVID patients after about 3 months of treatment (9-10 sessions on average).
  7. The technique aims to prevent acute COVID-19 symptoms from becoming chronic through early intervention and supportive treatment.
  8. It's considered a natural, non-invasive approach that can be used alongside other treatments as part of a comprehensive management plan for Long COVID.
While more research is needed, the Perrin Technique appears to offer a targeted approach to addressing the underlying physiological issues thought to contribute to Long COVID symptoms, particularly related to lymphatic function and toxin clearance.
